POLAND: Tusk as EPP Leader Candidate

German daily “Frankfurter Allgemeine Zeitung”, reported that European Council President and former Prime Minister Donald Tusk may become the European People’s Party leader. In November, the EPP’s members will decide who will replace Joseph Daul, and Tusk is now considered a favourite. The daily further reports that Manfred Weber who was previously shortlisted for this position will likely withdraw his candidacy – supposedly due to a lack of support. As a former European Council President, Donald Tusk would certainly strengthen the position of the EPP group. On a personal level, he would also retain his presence and influence in European Union politics. Tusk, however is yet to announce his future plans. Previously, Polish commentators speculated that he may return to domestic politics as an opposition candidate in the 2020 presidential election, but these reports have recently died down. Albeit, the result of the 13 October general election may become a factor in Tusk’s decision and resurface some of the previous speculations.
