POLAND: PM visits New York
Polish Prime Minister Mateusz Morawiecki visited New York for a one day visit to bolster trade and diplomatic ties. Even during the busy campaigning ahead of this month’s local elections, the PiS government seeks to put as much effort as possible in bolstering ties with the US. Especially following the recent visit of President Andrzej Duda to the White House, commentators are now arguing that Poland will have an “America First” diplomatic policy, coupled with an intense charm offensive. Morawiecki’s held talks with the US Ambassador to Poland Georgette Mosbacher, attended a Polish-American business gala, and opened Thursday’s trading session at Wall Street. The PM also gave an interview in a CNN business programme where he reiterated that Poland is pro-European and “Brussels-sceptic” at the same time. Still, in domestic politics the PM’s visit to the US has been overshadowed by the publication of recordings of private conversations Morawiecki held in 2013. This is part of the so-called wiretap scandal, which began over four years ago with recordings of PO officials leaking to the media. More on this in today’s CEC Weekly Update.
